This Datapack, also ported into mod form, reworks the potion brewing system entirely, allowing you to just pick up a Waterbottle, some coal and create a Potion in a scavenged brewing stand. Soon you'll go from making your first potions to creating powerful level 4 potions in the late-game!
IMPORTANT:
- if you play with the datapack version, you need to ALSO copy the datapack Zip folder into your RESOURCEPACK FOLDER and load the datapack AS a resourcepack! Otherwise potions will have weird untranslated names.
- due to the datapack-driven nature of Home Brewed, there are some weird visual bugs with the creative inventory if you pick up some items. The bug usually fixes itself by opening and closing the inventory again.
What is this datapack mainly doing?
- Potions and Water bottles now stack to 8. Stews now stack to 16. (Works with bundles too!)
- Reworks how potions are acquired, tying them into progression by making maximum duration and power tied to specific materials found across all the dimensions.
- This includes allowing potion making as early game as possible, by allowing brewing stands to be found in more places + making ingredients easier for low level potions and fueling the brewing stand with overworld materials like coal or lava.
- Increasing their potential power to twice as much as vanilla and max duration to up to 4x as much by using these specific materials. For many effects both can be mixed and matched!
- Adding many new brewing recipes for many effects, and reworks many recipes and their ingredients for better balance and accessibility.
- Reworking how Potions work, allowing them to be drunk faster and stack up to 8, plus adding cooldowns after use for balancing.
- Making lingering potions much more accessible, rather than being tied to end-game, and buffing the durations of all lingering potions!
- And various other small things like more suspicious stew effects, brewable bottle o' enchantings, easier tipped arrows, and advancements to tie it all together.
We added an Advancement tab that will help you explore and discover what potions you can brew in game, however of course you can read up here too how the system works. We also have a Home Brewed Info Page
What is Brewing Fuel?
Potion fuel in vanilla is normally just blaze powder, with 20 charges/uses, and brewing time of 20 seconds per operation. With this Brewing System overhaul we expanded what items can be used and how effective they are, allowing brewing early game and making it more effective late game:
- Coal has 8 charges, with a x0.75 time multiplier (26.7 seconds per brew)
- Charcoal has 8 charges, with a x0.75 time multiplier (26.7 seconds per brew)
- Lava Bucket has 80 charges, with a x1 time multiplier (20 seconds per brew)
- Blaze Powder has 8 charges, with a x1.5 time multiplier (13.3 seconds per brew)
- Fire Charges has 10 charges, with a x2 time multiplier (10 seconds per brew)
How do I brew a Potion?
You simply grab a water bottle and put it into the brewing stand, then add the ingredients you want for the desired effect. Awkward potions are no longer a necessary step, and both awkward and Mundane/Thick potions have different use cases now.
How do i make my potions stronger?
In vanilla, you use glowstone dust to make a potion stronger and pay with potion lengh for it, or redstone to instead make it last longer. With Home Brewed, we took this system to new lengths, allowing you to make potions longer AND stronger at the same time. You can also buff them more than once! Allowing you to mix and match potion strengths up to Lv.4 or even up to 32 minutes for a potion effect. Remember: everytime you make a potion stronger, it also lasts shorter. In practice this means, for example, you can make a Speed 4 potion that lasts 3 minutes, or a Jump Boost 2 potion that lasts 16 minutes. For all this and more you need the following ingredients:
- To make a Potion Stronger:
- Amethyst Shards to level it up from lv 1 to lv 2
- Nether Warts to level it up from lv 2 to lv 3
- Dragon Breath to level it up from lv 3 to lv 4
- To make a Potion Last Longer:
- Redstone Dust to buff it from 3:00 min to 8:00 min / 0:45 min to 1:30 min for short duration potions
- Eye of Ender to buff it from 8:00 min to 16:00 min / 1:30 min to 3:00 min for short duration potions
- Nether Star to buff it from 16:00 min to 32:00 min / 3:00 min to 8:00 min for short duration potions
Dragon breath? I thought you need this to make lingering potions.
With Home Brewed we decided that the renewable boss items should be what allows you to make the strongest potions, and that lingering potions, and with that, tipped arrows, should be easier to access.
- To make a splash potion, you need to use Gunpowder, like in vanilla.
- To upgrade a splash potion to a lingering potion, you need Wind Charges.
- (This was done because you commonly find lingering potions in trail chambers alongside wind charges, making the ingredient choice more thematic).

What happened to Awkward/Mundane/Thick Potions?
1 of those was only useful in vanilla, and was required to brew any worthwhile potion. With Home Brewed we reuse these long forgotten Potion types as a way for you to prepare Potion Effect strengths ahead of time, so that you can mix them with any effect ingredient later on at your leisure.
- Water Bottle mixed with Amethyst Shards will create a Mundane Potion, which can be used to make any Lv.2 Potion
- Mundane Potion mixed with Nether Warts will create an Awkward Potion, which can be used to make any Lv.3 Potion
- Awkward Potion mixed with Dragon Breath will create a Thick Potion, which can be used to make any Lv.4 Potion!
What did you do to stews?
First of: we made Stews stackable to 16, including suspicious stews. this means with a bit of experimentin you can determen what a suspicious stew effect is that you found and help you carry those mini potion effects around with you. We are aware of how strong saturation potions are and how easy they where to craft in vanilla, so we changed some recipees and made new effects aviable:
- For Blindness Stew you need Azure Bluet or an Open Eyeblossom
- For Saturation Stew you need a Golden Dandelion or Blue Orchid
- For Nausea Stew you need a Closed Eyeblossom
- For Jump Boost Stew you need a Cornflower
- For Poison Stew you need a Lily of the Valley
- For Regeneration Stew you need Oxeye Daisy
- For Night Vision Stew you need a Poppy or a Torch Flower
- For Weakness Stew you need any Tulips
- For Wither Stew you need a Wither Rose
- For Fire Resistance Stew you need a Cactus Flower
- For Speed Stew you need Pink Petals or Wildflowers
- For Slow Falling Stew you need Dandelion or a Spore Blossom
- For Water Breathing Stew you need a Lilypad
- For Slowness Stew you need Liliac
- For Haste Stew you need Peony
- For Strength Stew you need a Rose Bush
- For Glowing Stew you need a Sunflower
- For Hunger Stew you need Pitcherpod
- For Resistance Stew you need Allium
- Chorus Flowers have a unique effect! They make a suspicious stew that teleports you like a chorus fruit, but in a 32 block range.
